On one track, coqui frogs sing an eerie, extraterrestrial chorus in Hilo; on another, falling cave water drip-drops in a syncopated beat on O\u02bbahu\u2019s Waimalu Trail. Spanning six islands and three decades, Aloha \u2018\u0100ina\u2019s 106 recordings form a kind of travelogue and time capsule, with Ebersbach playing the role of sonic naturalist. Not that the 78-year-old sound engineer thinks of himself or his project that way. \u201cI don&#8217;t think much when I\u2019m on a trail,\u201d he says. \u201cI just enjoy being on the trail, listening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ebersbach started hiking on O\u02bbahu in the late \u201960s, shortly after graduating from Yale University and moving to the island to pursue a master\u2019s degree in linguistics from the University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa. Having grown up in New Jersey, where the freewheeling world of New York City\u2019s jazz scene was just a train ride away, he initially felt \u201climited\u201d on O\u2018ahu, alienated from the landscape of adventure and discovery he once knew. Until he started hiking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never got really comfortable here until then,\u201d says Ebersbach, who works out of his recording studio, Pacific Music Productions, in Honolulu\u2019s Chinatown. \u201cAnd then I realized how big the island is.\u201d He was amazed at how vast the trails were, splintering off into hidden pathways that revealed microclimates and, within those subtle shifts, entirely new sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>He dropped out of school after a semester and grew out his hair, devoting his days and nights to playing the keyboard in different lounge acts throughout Waik\u012bk\u012b, then an open-air fantasia for live music. Though he initially set out to be a jazz musician, the exploratory energy fueling then \u201970s expanded the scope of Ebersbach\u2019s interests. \u201cIt made me curious about everything,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With curiosity leading the way, Ebersbach hopscotched through a kaleidoscope of sounds throughout the decades, from his jazz-funk lounge act, US, in the \u201970s to the neo-exotica of Don Tiki, an ensemble group he fronted in the \u201990s. Threading it all together was a kind of Buddhist pursuit: finding the music in everything. \u201cI would buy a [John] Cage record or something, just whatever\u2019s the weirdest record that\u2019s there,\u201d he says, \u201cand I would try to find out what it is that makes it music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He started the new wave band The Tourists and Hawai\u2018i\u2019s first post-punk outfit, The Squids, in the \u201970s precisely because of each genre\u2019s \u201cirritating\u201d sound. And then I realized how big the island is.<\/p>\n<cite>Kit Ebersbach, Musician<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That ethos animates Aloha \u2018\u0100ina, presenting nature as a kind of ever-evolving symphony. Each of the 12 volumes runs an hour long, with tracks ranging from a little over a minute (\u201cPalms, Kamoamoa, Hawai\u2018i Island&#8221;) to nearly 16 minutes (\u201cNear the Mauka Junction of Pauoa Loop Trail, O\u2018ahu\u201d) depending on how long the subject matter sustained Ebersbach\u2019s interest. \u201cAfter eight minutes of a rushing stream,\u201d he says, \u201cit gets to be like, OK, that\u2019s nice, now let\u2019s get on to the birds or something.\u201d (Bird song dominates the collection.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He makes every effort to avoid noise pollution\u2014an ambitious feat on O\u02bbahu\u2019s crowded trails and beaches\u2014preferring to present a romanticized version of Hawai\u02bbi instead. This often means venturing off the beaten path and stepping away from the recorder to avoid attracting flies or capturing the sound of his own breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of Aloha \u2018\u0100ina\u2019s impact has to do with the timing of its launch in 2020. Roger Bong, owner of the Honolulu-based record label Aloha Got Soul, approached Ebersbach about his field recordings just as COVID-19 lockdowns were underway. \u201cWe have this treasure trove of what could potentially be very healing, therapeutic, inspiring sounds for people, from a place that\u2019s very special,\u201d Bong reasoned. \u201cAnd it could reach people around the world in a time when everyone\u2019s stuck at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure sounds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Bong first encountered Ebersbach\u2019s field recordings years earlier on a flight operated by Hawaiian Airlines, where Ebersbach has been curating the in-flight radio channels for over a decade.
